Learn About Water Policy
Water is a frequent concern when housing projects are proposed. There have been a number of droughts in Marin, so residents wonder how we can accommodate more people. The truth is new housing, especially multi-family housing, has very little impact on water usage. Most of our housing was built before water conservation features were common. New construction uses just a fraction of water compared to exisitng housing.
The chart below shows 2023 water usage by customer type. Single family homes are the single biggest consumer of water. Water for the landscaping of single family homes uses more water than all mutli-family housing in Marin. More multi-family housing has minimal impact on water usage.
Marin Water is responsibility for ensuring adequate supplies of housing. They have confirmed that we have adequate water supplies to support state housing goals. They have programs in place to ensure an adequate supply of water during future droughts.
