Call Marin Home: building on MEHC’s legacy

Marin is changing. For many years, MEHC (Marin Environmental Housing Collaborative) was one of the few organizational supporters of affordable housing. Now, many Marin organizations, leaders and residents recognize that we are in a housing crisis. Marin’s average home price is $1.7 million — unaffordable to the vast majority of residents. We are experiencing the fastest rates of displacement in the Bay Area, leading to a hollowing out of our workforce and families. Marin leaders are mobilizing to drive the change we need – to create a community where all can Call Marin Home.

— Jenny Silva, Executive Director

A look at housing progress in 2025 …

The huge demand for housing, state laws encouraging more action, and increased public support have resulted in an increase in housing activity in 2025. We have seen many new projects proposed and approved this year. Overall,  34 projects moved forward in 2025. If built, these projects will provide 1,408 affordable units and  5,408 total new units. Unfortunately, it’s challenging to get from approval to construction. Currently, many projects are stalled due to lack of financing. Only 330 units are under construction.

MEHC provided extensive outreach and advocacy efforts for a number of projects, most notably, Oak HillMarinwood Plaza240 Tamal Vista Blvd, and  350 Merrydale Rd. For these four projects alone we engaged in 51 acts of advocacy. This included coordinating letters to the editor, Marin Voice op-eds in the Marin IJ, public comment at meetings, Action Alerts, email templates, forming talking points, endorsements, and formal MEHC letters — resulting in housing wins for each project.

We took 131 advocacy actions to support housing this year

As you may have heard, Marin Environmental Housing Collaborative is now Call Marin Home, a coalition designed to unite Marin’s leading organizations around systemic solutions to our housing crisis. Call Marin Home focuses on the three Ps of affordable housing: production, preservation, and protections. As we close the book on 2025, we also stamp the record of MEHC’s two-decade run. We’d like to share a few highlights from this year.

We are grateful to have received record fundraising this year

These grants demonstrate confidence in our organization to tackle the housing crisis in Marin County from a variety of angles. We are utilizing these funds to create a Housing Project Pipeline database, create an interactive map of all active projects, launch and manage the Call Marin Home coalition, and implement our public education tabling program at various local events and farmer’s markets.
